“He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.””
What does Luke 3:11 mean?
John the Baptist is calling people to live differently when they repent. He's not asking for dramatic sacrifice or poverty, but for basic human generosity: if you have extra, share it with someone who doesn't have enough. The specificity of coats and food matters because these were survival essentials, and John is saying real change means noticing the people around you who are struggling and actually doing something about it. This cuts through the tendency to think repentance is only about personal feelings or religious correctness. For John, turning toward God means turning toward your neighbor's actual need. It's remarkably practical, which is probably why it still strikes us: we know what we have, and we usually know who's going without.
