What does Luke 3:12 mean?
Tax collectors were among the most despised people in first-century Israel, seen as collaborators with Rome and notorious for skimming extra money from their communities. That these men would show up to John's baptism shows real spiritual hunger, and their question reveals something beautiful: they wanted to know how to actually live differently, not just perform a ritual. John's answer (which follows in the next verse) focuses on doing their job honestly and fairly, suggesting that genuine repentance doesn't always mean abandoning your work, but rather doing it with integrity and justice.
