What does Luke 24:37 mean?
The disciples had just watched Jesus die, and now—suddenly—he was standing in front of them alive. Their first instinct wasn't joy or recognition; it was sheer terror. They couldn't process what they were seeing, so their minds reached for the only explanation that made sense to them at that moment: they must be looking at a ghost. This reaction tells us something honest about faith. When God shows up in unexpected ways, our fear often comes before our faith. The disciples loved Jesus, yet they were still afraid. That doesn't mean their faith was weak—it means they were human, and encountering the impossible naturally shakes us. Jesus doesn't scold them for being scared; in the verses that follow, he gently invites them to touch him, to see that he's real and physical, not a spirit. He meets them where they are and helps them move from terror toward understanding.
