“As they said these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be to you.””
What does Luke 24:36 mean?
In this moment just after the resurrection, the disciples are gathered, frightened and bewildered by the reports that Jesus is alive. When Jesus suddenly appears among them, his first words aren't explanations or commands, but "Peace be to you." He greets them with the ancient Jewish blessing of *shalom*, which means far more than the absence of conflict—it's wholeness, security, and right relationship restored. In offering peace to people who are terrified and confused, Jesus is telling them that despite everything they've just witnessed and everything they don't yet understand, they are safe with him and everything will ultimately be well. It's a reminder that in our own moments of fear or uncertainty, Jesus meets us with reassurance before he meets us with answers.
