“He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow put in more than all of them,”
What does Luke 21:3 mean?
Jesus is pointing to what real generosity looks like, and it has nothing to do with the amount of money involved. The widow gave two small coins, essentially nothing by material standards, while the wealthy gave large sums from their surplus. Yet Jesus says her gift was greater because it cost her everything, while the others barely felt their donations. This cuts against how we usually measure generosity. We tend to be impressed by big numbers and public displays of giving. But Jesus sees what's actually happening in the heart: this woman's trust in God was so deep that she gave away money she needed to survive. Her sacrifice revealed her faith in a way that no amount of spare change from the rich ever could.
