What does Luke 21:2 mean?
This moment captures something Jesus wanted his followers to notice. The widow is giving what little she has, and Jesus draws attention to her quiet act of generosity in the temple. The "two small brass coins" (called lepta) were the smallest currency of the time, worth almost nothing to anyone else, but they likely represented a significant sacrifice for someone living in poverty. What makes this meaningful is the contrast: wealthy people were making large, visible donations to impress others, but this unnamed woman was giving in a way that nobody would celebrate or even really see. Jesus uses her example to teach that God measures generosity not by the amount given, but by what it costs the giver. When you're already struggling to survive and you still give, that reflects a trust and love that the large gifts of the wealthy don't.
