What does Luke 21:1 mean?
Jesus pauses to observe something happening around him, and what catches his attention is the wealthy making their offerings at the temple. This moment sets up one of his most striking teachings, because he's about to show his disciples that what looks impressive to us isn't what matters to God. The treasury was likely a visible, public space where people could see others giving, which means some may have been giving partly for show. In the verses that follow, Jesus will contrast these large gifts with a widow's small coin, teaching that generosity is measured not by the amount, but by what it costs the giver and what it reveals about their heart.
