What does Luke 2:8 mean?
On the night Jesus was born, ordinary shepherds were out doing their regular work, watching their sheep through the dark hours to keep them safe from predators. This detail matters because shepherds were among the lowest-status workers in first-century Jewish society, often looked down upon. Yet Luke tells us they were the first people to receive news of the Messiah's birth, chosen by God to be witnesses to something that would change everything. It's a gentle reminder that God notices and values people the world might overlook, and that he often works through the humble and unexpected rather than the powerful and prominent.
