Luke 17:4
“If he sins against you seven times in the day, and seven times returns, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.””
What does Luke 17:4 mean?
Jesus is calling us to forgive repeatedly, even when someone wrongs us many times over. The number "seven times" isn't meant to be literal—it's Jesus's way of saying "without limit" or "as many times as it takes." What makes this especially challenging is that the person has to genuinely turn around and ask for forgiveness each time, and we're still called to let it go. This speaks to something real in relationships: people we love do hurt us again, sometimes in the same way. The point isn't that we become doormats or ignore patterns of harm. Rather, Jesus is inviting us toward a kind of freedom—the freedom that comes from not storing up resentment or keeping score. When someone sincerely repents, we release our grip on the hurt, trusting that healing is possible even in messy, complicated relationships.
