“They ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ship, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.”
What does Luke 17:27 mean?
Jesus is describing ordinary life in Noah's time, right up until the moment everything changed. People were simply living their daily routines—eating, drinking, getting married—completely unaware that judgment was coming. They had warning through Noah's preaching, yet they ignored it and went about their business as usual. The point isn't that eating or marrying is wrong. Rather, Jesus is saying that people were so absorbed in normal life that they refused to take seriously the message of what was coming. He's warning his listeners not to make the same mistake, to stay spiritually alert instead of becoming so caught up in everyday concerns that they ignore what truly matters. When sudden judgment comes, it catches people unprepared because they weren't paying attention.
