What does Luke 17:10 mean?
Jesus is teaching us something countercultural about humility and obedience. When we've followed God's instructions faithfully, the right response isn't pride or expectation of reward, but quiet recognition that we've simply done what was asked of us. He's not saying we should feel worthless, but rather that obedience itself is our calling, not something that puts God in our debt. This hits at a tender place: we often do good things hoping to earn favor or recognition, either from God or others. Jesus gently redirects that impulse by reminding us that completing our duties is just that, our duty. There's actually freedom in this. When we stop keeping score and stop expecting applause for doing what's right, we can serve more genuinely, from a place of love rather than transaction. It's an invitation to let go of the exhausting work of proving ourselves.
