What does Luke 17:9 mean?

Jesus is describing a master who comes home from work and finds his servant has prepared dinner and done the day's tasks. The master doesn't throw a party or express gratitude, because the servant was simply doing what he was hired to do. Jesus uses this everyday scene to shift how we think about serving God and others. When we help someone or live according to our values, we shouldn't expect special recognition or feel that God owes us something. The work itself, done faithfully, is its own purpose. This is an invitation to let go of keeping score and to find freedom in serving without needing applause.
