What does Luke 14:34 mean?
Jesus is using salt as a picture of something precious that can lose its value. In his time, salt was essential for preserving food and adding flavor, so it was genuinely valuable. But once salt lost its saltiness (which could happen if it was mixed with other minerals or exposed to moisture), it was worthless and couldn't be recovered or improved. He's speaking this after calling people to be his disciples, asking them to count the cost of following him. The point is gentle but serious: if you claim to follow Jesus but let that commitment become bland and meaningless in your life, what good are you then? You can't restore yourself on your own. It's an invitation to examine whether your faith is living and active, or whether you've drifted into going through the motions.
