What does Luke 14:35 mean?
Jesus is wrapping up his teaching about salt losing its saltiness, and here he's saying that worthless salt is so useless it can't even improve the soil or fertilize a field. It gets thrown away as garbage. Then he adds that familiar call, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear," which is his way of saying this matters, so pay attention to what I'm really saying here. The underlying point is about spiritual usefulness: if we claim to follow Jesus but don't actually live it out, we become ineffective, like salt that's lost its purpose. We're called to make a real difference in the world, not just claim the name while contributing nothing. The bluntness of the image, garbage destined for the trash heap, invites us to think seriously about what our faith actually changes in how we live.
