What does Luke 14:32 mean?
Jesus is describing what a wise king does when he realizes he's vastly outnumbered by an approaching army. Rather than rushing into certain defeat, he sends messengers to negotiate before the battle even begins. The point isn't really about warfare, though, it's about recognizing reality and taking action while you still have a choice. In the broader passage, Jesus is challenging his followers to think hard about what following him actually costs and whether they're ready for it. He's saying that wisdom means counting the cost upfront, just like a king would honestly assess his military strength before making his next move. If you can't or won't pay the price of discipleship, it's better to admit that now than to pretend and fail later.
