“Or what king, as he goes to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?”
What does Luke 14:31 mean?
Jesus uses the picture of a king preparing for battle to make a point about counting the cost. Before you march into war, you'd be foolish not to pause and honestly assess whether you have enough resources to win, or if you should try negotiating peace instead. He's not really talking about warfare here, but about the seriousness of following him as his disciple. Just as a king needs to know what he's getting into, so do we. Jesus wants people to understand that becoming his follower isn't something to stumble into without thinking, but something to choose with clear eyes about what it will mean. He's being respectful of human freedom, not trying to trick anyone into commitment. This honesty, this invitation to count the cost, is actually what makes the decision to follow him meaningful when we do make it.
