Luke 14:16
βBut he said to him, βA certain man made a great supper, and he invited many people.β
What does Luke 14:16 mean?
Jesus is beginning a parable (a teaching story) about a lavish dinner invitation. A wealthy man plans an enormous feast and sends out invitations to many guests, which was a normal practice in that culture. What happens next, in the verses that follow, reveals something surprising about how people respond to generosity and grace, and it speaks to how we sometimes treat God's invitation into relationship with him. The extravagance of the meal matters because it shows how much the host values his guests and how earnestly he wants them to come.
