“Or those eighteen, on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them; do you think that they were worse offenders than all the men who dwell in Jerusalem?”
What does Luke 13:4 mean?
Jesus is responding to a tragedy, pushing back against a common assumption of his time (and ours): that when bad things happen to people, it must be because they deserved it. When the tower of Siloam collapsed and killed eighteen people, folks apparently wondered what those victims had done wrong to bring such judgment on themselves. Jesus asks directly: do you really think those eighteen were worse sinners than everyone else living safely in Jerusalem? The question itself is the answer, and it's a gentle no. Suffering isn't a reliable measure of guilt, and terrible accidents aren't divine punishment for individual wrongdoing. This matters deeply when we're grieving or when we're tempted to judge others' hardships as evidence of their failings.
