“I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.”
What does Luke 13:3 mean?
Jesus is responding to people asking about a tragedy—some Galileans who were killed by Pilate. Rather than debating why suffering happens, he pivots to something more urgent: the spiritual condition of his listeners. He's not saying those victims were worse sinners than anyone else, but that everyone needs to turn around spiritually or face judgment. The word "repent" here means more than feeling sorry; it means genuinely changing direction, turning from sin toward God. Jesus speaks with real urgency because he cares about the actual fate of the people listening to him. He's calling them to wake up to what matters most before it's too late, whether that's literal death or spiritual separation from God.
