What does Luke 1:5 mean?

This opening introduces us to Zacharias and Elizabeth, a faithful Jewish couple living during the reign of King Herod. Both came from priestly families (Elizabeth was descended from Aaron, the first high priest), so they would have been respected members of their community and deeply devoted to God's law and worship. The careful detail about their heritage tells us something important: they were righteous people with every advantage for blessing, yet Luke is setting up their story in a way that makes what comes next feel impossible. Meeting them here, we're invited to understand their longing and their faith before we hear how God answers their deepest prayer in an unexpected way.
