What does Luke 1:22 mean?
Zechariah had just encountered the angel Gabriel in the temple's inner sanctuary, a stunning and terrifying moment that left him doubting God's promise of a son. His muteness became his consequence for that doubt, but it was also merciful in a way: it forced him into silence and reflection during the nine months before his son John's birth, giving him time to process what God was doing. The people watching him try desperately to communicate through gestures could tell something extraordinary had happened. His inability to speak wasn't punishment meant to shame him, but rather a sign pointing everyone around him toward the miraculous events unfolding. Sometimes our limitations and struggles become the very thing that makes God's work visible to those around us.
