What does Luke 1:21 mean?
Zacharias (also called Zechariah) was a priest performing his assigned duties in the temple, and people outside were waiting for him to reappear. His job involved burning incense at the altar, a sacred act that typically didn't take long. When he stayed inside much longer than expected, the waiting crowd grew puzzled and concerned about what could be keeping him. What made this delay so remarkable is that something extraordinary was actually happening: an angel had appeared to Zacharias with news that he and his elderly wife would have a son (John the Baptist). The people outside had no idea about this life-changing encounter, so all they experienced was confusion and waiting. Their wonder reminds us that God sometimes works in ways completely hidden from those around us, even when others are watching and wondering what's taking so long.
