Leviticus 8:15
“He killed it; and Moses took the blood, and put it around on the horns of the altar with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar, and sanctified it, to make atonement for it.”
What does Leviticus 8:15 mean?
This passage describes part of the ceremony where Aaron and his sons were ordained as priests. The "it" refers to a sin offering, an animal sacrifice meant to cleanse both the altar and those about to serve at it. By applying blood to the horns (the raised corners) of the altar and pouring it out at its base, Moses was symbolically covering the sacred space and preparing it for holy use. The blood represented life given up, and in Israel's worship system, blood was understood as having cleansing power.
