What does Leviticus 8:16 mean?
This passage describes part of the ritual for consecrating Aaron as priest, where specific internal organs and their surrounding fat were burned as an offering to God. In ancient Jewish practice, the fat was considered the richest, most valuable part of an animal, so burning it symbolized giving God the best. The liver's covering and kidneys were thought to be especially significant organs, making their inclusion part of what was considered a complete and proper offering. For those of us far removed from temple sacrifices, the core idea still speaks: this was about setting apart something precious and intentionally directing it toward God rather than keeping it for personal use.
