What does Leviticus 25:51 mean?

In ancient Israel, when someone sold themselves into servitude to pay off debt, this law protected them from being trapped forever. If a person had been sold with many years remaining on their contract, they could buy back their freedom early by repaying a portion of the purchase price, calculated fairly based on how much time was left. The amount wouldn't be the full original price, but rather scaled down to reflect the years of service already completed. This was a compassionate safeguard ensuring that even the poorest person had a genuine path to reclaim their liberty, not just a theoretical one.
