“If there remain but a few years to the year of jubilee, then he shall reckon with him; according to his years of service he shall give back the price of his redemption.”
What does Leviticus 25:52 mean?
When someone sold themselves into servitude because of debt, they weren't trapped forever. If a jubilee year (which came every fifty years) was approaching and there weren't many years left before freedom came anyway, the price to buy their freedom was adjusted downward, proportional to how close they were to automatic release. It's a surprisingly humane detail: the closer someone was to their guaranteed freedom date, the cheaper it cost to let them go early. This reflects an underlying principle in Israel's system, that no person was meant to be enslaved permanently. Even in hard financial circumstances, there was always a path to freedom, and the law tried to make that path affordable.
