Leviticus 25:50
“He shall reckon with him who bought him from the year that he sold himself to him to the Year of Jubilee. The price of his sale shall be according to the number of years; he shall be with him according to the time of a hired servant.”
What does Leviticus 25:50 mean?
This passage describes how an Israelite who sold himself into servitude could be bought back, with the price adjusted based on how many years remained until the Year of Jubilee (which came every fifty years). The closer to Jubilee, the lower the buyback price, since the servant would soon be released anyway. It's essentially a financial correction that prevented permanent slavery: no matter what happened, everyone got a fresh start every fifty years. For someone reading this today, the principle reflects something beautiful about God's design: even when circumstances force us into difficult seasons or feel like we're trapped, there's always a built-in limit and a path toward freedom.
