“You shall sow the eighth year, and eat of the fruits, the old store; until the ninth year, until its fruits come in, you shall eat the old store.”
What does Leviticus 25:22 mean?
During Israel's sabbatical years (every seventh year), the land was to rest and remain unharvested. This verse describes what happened in the eighth year, after that rest: when people resumed planting, they still had to wait for the new crop to mature. So God promised abundance in the sixth year, generous enough that the stored harvest would sustain them through the fallow seventh year, the replanting eighth year, and into the ninth year when the new crops finally arrived. The deeper message is trust. These instructions asked people to believe that God would provide so bountifully that three years of irregular harvests wouldn't leave them hungry. It's a remarkable counterintuitive promise: sometimes obedience and rest lead to greater security than constant work.
