Leviticus 25:23
““‘The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; for you are strangers and live as foreigners with me.”
What does Leviticus 25:23 mean?
God is reminding the Israelites that ultimate ownership of the land belongs to him alone, not to them. Even when people bought or sold property, the land would return to its original owners every 50 years (the Year of Jubilee), preventing anyone from claiming permanent possession. The deeper point is that we ourselves are temporary residents in God's world, holding things in trust rather than owning them outright, and this should shape how we treat both the land and one another with generosity and justice.
