What does Judges 8:14 mean?
Gideon has just won a major military victory and is pursuing the enemy kings Zebah and Zalmunna. On his way, he passes through Succoth, a town whose leaders had refused to help his army with food, doubting whether he could actually win. Now that victory is his, Gideon captures a young man from the city and forces him to write out the names of all the town's leaders, seventy-seven of them, so Gideon will know exactly who to hold accountable for their earlier betrayal. This moment shows Gideon's anger simmering beneath the surface, even as God had given him the victory he needed.
