Judges 8:13
βGideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.β
What does Judges 8:13 mean?
Gideon is coming home after his victory against the Midianite army, a battle where he led just three hundred men against thousands of enemies. The "ascent of Heres" was likely a mountain pass on his route back to his homeland in the hill country of Ephraim, so this simple detail helps us picture him making his way through the landscape after the conflict. At this point in the story, Gideon's exhaustion must have been real, even though he'd won an incredible victory. This moment captures something true about us too: even when God accomplishes something wonderful through us, we still need rest and time to process what happened.
