Judges 6:2
“The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made themselves the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.”
What does Judges 6:2 mean?
The Midianites were raiders who repeatedly invaded Israel's land, stealing crops and livestock, forcing the Israelites into survival mode. Rather than living openly in their homes and villages, people had to hide in caves and fortified places in the mountains just to stay safe and protect what little they had. This paints a picture of oppression so severe that normal life became impossible, and fear became the constant backdrop to daily existence. It's a reminder of what happens when violence and injustice go unchecked, and it sets the stage for God calling Gideon to lead a deliverance.
