What does Judges 2:4 mean?

The Israelites are hearing hard truth from God's messenger. They've broken their covenant with God by turning to other gods and abandoning His ways, and now they're facing the consequences of that choice. When the reality of what they've done sinks in, their response is immediate and emotional, tears flowing as they finally grasp the seriousness of their unfaithfulness. There's something deeply human here, and maybe even hopeful. Their weeping shows they haven't become completely hardened, that God's words still have the power to reach their hearts and convict them. Sometimes we need to feel the weight of our choices before we can turn back toward what's true.
