Judges 2:3
“Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.’””
What does Judges 2:3 mean?
God is telling the Israelites that because they've broken their covenant promise to completely remove the pagan peoples from the land, He won't simply hand them victory anymore. Instead, those neighboring nations will remain as thorns in their side—a constant pressure and reminder of their disobedience. Their gods and practices will become a temptation that draws Israel away from faithfulness, becoming like a trap that catches and holds them. This isn't punishment out of cruelty but consequence out of love: God is allowing Israel to experience the real weight of their choices so they might turn back to Him. Sometimes when we compromise on what we know is right, we find ourselves tangled up in complications we didn't expect. The verse speaks to how our half-obedience often leaves us more vulnerable than we realize.
