Judges 2:17

Yet they didn’t listen to their judges; for they prostituted themselves to other gods, and bowed themselves down to them. They quickly turned away from the way in which their fathers walked, obeying Yahweh’s commandments. They didn’t do so.

What does Judges 2:17 mean?

Even when God sent judges to guide Israel back toward faithfulness, the people refused to listen and instead chased after other gods and idols. They abandoned the path their ancestors had walked, the one marked by obedience to God's commands, and did the opposite of what they were called to do. This verse captures a painful cycle: people receive help and clear direction, yet choose their own way anyway, often pulled by whatever seems more appealing in the moment. It's a honest picture of how we sometimes resist good guidance when we're drawn toward something else.
