Judges 1:30
“Zebulun didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived among them, and became subject to forced labor.”
What does Judges 1:30 mean?
After Israel entered the promised land, the tribes were supposed to fully drive out the people already living there. Zebulun didn't complete this task, instead allowing the Canaanites to remain in their territory. Rather than being conquered enemies, these people stayed and eventually became forced laborers for the Israelites, creating a complex arrangement that mixed the two populations together. This pattern repeats throughout Judges 1, showing that Israel's incomplete obedience had real consequences. Living alongside the people they were meant to displace created ongoing tensions and eventually contributed to Israel turning away from God's ways. The passage reminds us that partial obedience to what we know is right often leaves us with complications we then have to manage.
