What does Judges 1:29 mean?
After the Israelites entered the land God promised them, they were supposed to fully take possession of it, but the tribe of Ephraim left some of the original inhabitants in place instead of completing the conquest. Rather than remove these Canaanites, Ephraim chose to live alongside them, which created a divided community and set up problems down the road. This small choice to be incomplete in their obedience—taking the easier path of coexistence rather than following through—echoes throughout the book of Judges as a pattern of half-hearted commitment. It's a quiet but telling moment about how we sometimes settle for compromise when we know we're called to something more, and how that incomplete faithfulness can shape our future in ways we don't anticipate.
