What does Joshua 9:23 mean?
Joshua speaks these words after discovering that the Gibeonites deceived him into making a peace covenant with them. Because Joshua had already sworn an oath before God, he couldn't break the agreement, but he could enforce a punishment. The Gibeonites would become permanent servants to the tabernacle, doing the hard, unglamorous work of cutting wood and carrying water for worship.
