“They answered Joshua, and said, “Because your servants were certainly told how Yahweh your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.”
What does Joshua 9:24 mean?
The Gibeonites are explaining why they deceived Joshua and the Israelites into making a peace treaty with them. They had heard about God's promise to give the land to Israel and the destruction that followed, so they were terrified they'd be killed like other peoples in the region. Instead of fighting, they resorted to a trick, pretending to be from far away so the Israelites would make a binding agreement with them. This moment reveals something deeply human about fear: it can drive us to desperation and deception. The Gibeonites weren't evil people, just frightened ones trying to survive. Their honesty here, once caught, actually saved their lives, since breaking a sworn covenant was unthinkable in that culture.
