What does Joshua 9:22 mean?
Joshua is confronting the Gibeonites, who tricked the Israelites into making a peace treaty by pretending to be from a distant land when they actually lived right next door. His words capture that raw moment of discovery, when the deception is laid bare and he's demanding to know why they lied. The question itself is almost rhetorical, tinged with frustration, because the answer is obvious: they lied because they feared for their lives if the Israelites knew the truth about their proximity.
