“Israel has sinned. Yes, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. Yes, they have even taken some of the devoted things, and have also stolen, and also deceived. They have even put it among their own stuff.”
What does Joshua 7:11 mean?
God is saying that one person's hidden disobedience has broken the whole community's relationship with him. After the miraculous conquest of Jericho, the Israelites were told not to take anything from the city—everything was devoted to God. But one man (Achan) secretly took some treasures and hid them in his tent, and God treated it as a betrayal by the entire nation. This shows how seriously God took both the stealing and the lying about it. Notice that the passage lists it all out: they transgressed the covenant, they took what wasn't theirs, they stole, they deceived. The last detail, about putting it among their own stuff, emphasizes that this wasn't accidental—it was deliberate concealment. For us today, this speaks to how our hidden choices matter and how they affect our communities. It's a sobering reminder that we can't compartmentalize our lives and pretend our secret wrongs don't count. At the same time, it invites us to be honest about what we're hiding, knowing that truth-telling and returning to God is always the path forward.
