Joshua 7:10
“Yahweh said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face like that?”
What does Joshua 7:10 mean?
God's question to Joshua comes after Israel's first military defeat, a devastating loss that shook Joshua's faith. Rather than scolding him for grieving, God is essentially asking, "Why are you staying down?" It's an invitation to move from despair into action, a reminder that lying prostrate in prayer is meaningful only if it leads somewhere. This speaks to a real tension in faith: there's a time to grieve and lament, but there's also a time to get up. God isn't dismissing Joshua's pain, but he is redirecting his attention from what was lost toward what needs to be done next. The defeat happened because someone in the camp had disobeyed God, and that problem needed addressing. Sometimes our hardest spiritual work isn't about feeling better, but about getting back on our feet and moving forward.
