Joshua 3:10

Joshua said, “By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Hivite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite out from before you.

What does Joshua 3:10 mean?

Joshua is standing at the Jordan River with the Israelites, about to enter the promised land after forty years of wandering. He's reassuring the people that God's presence isn't just something to believe in abstractly, but something they're about to witness firsthand through concrete action. The specific list of nations isn't meant to overwhelm us with names, but rather to show that no matter how many obstacles stand in the way, God's promise to clear the path forward is real and comprehensive. This is Joshua's way of saying: keep your eyes open, because you're about to see God work in ways that will leave no doubt about his presence with you.
