What does Joshua 19:3 mean?

This short verse lists three towns that were assigned to the tribe of Simeon within Judah's territory during the division of the Promised Land. These weren't major cities, but practical landmarks that helped establish the boundaries and holdings of Simeon's inheritance. The names themselves (Hazar Shual means "village of the jackal," for instance) give us a sense of the landscape and wildlife of that ancient region. While these particular places don't feature in dramatic stories, they represent God's concrete, detailed care in giving his people a genuine home and secure place to build their lives.
