What does Joshua 17:14 mean?
The descendants of Joseph (the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh) were feeling squeezed. They'd received what seemed like a small territory in the Promised Land, and they were pushing back against Joshua, arguing that their large population deserved more land. Their complaint carried a note of entitlement: God has blessed us with many people, so shouldn't we get more space? Joshua doesn't immediately cave to their demands. Instead, he essentially tells them that if they're so numerous and strong, they should clear and conquer the forested hill country themselves rather than waiting for everything to be handed to them. It's a moment that speaks to how easily we can feel overlooked or shortchanged, especially when we sense God's favor in other ways. Sometimes we forget that blessing includes the strength to work for what we need, not just the gift of having it given freely.
