When the children of Israel had grown strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and didn’t utterly drive them out.

What does Joshua 17:13 mean?

This verse captures a moment when Israel's military position had improved enough that they no longer feared annihilation, so instead of completing the conquest as God had instructed, they took a practical shortcut. Rather than fully dispossessing the Canaanites, they enslaved them, which was easier and more economically beneficial. It's a sobering reminder of how success and strength can tempt us to compromise with half-measures, especially when the full obedience God asks for feels harder than settling for something less. The surrounding chapters show this decision had real consequences, as these remaining populations later became sources of conflict and spiritual compromise for Israel.
