Joshua 17:15
“Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest, and clear land for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim; since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.””
What does Joshua 17:15 mean?
Joshua is responding to the tribe of Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh) who are complaining that their allotted territory isn't large enough for their growing population. Rather than simply giving them more land, he essentially says, "You're strong and numerous, so use that strength to expand your own territory by clearing the forested areas that aren't yet settled." There's something practical and almost encouraging in his response. Joshua isn't dismissing their need or being unkind, but he's also not enabling passivity. He's pointing out that they have the resources and ability to solve their own problem. It's a reminder that sometimes when we face limitations, the answer isn't always to wait for someone else to fix things for us, but to recognize the strength and capability we already have and put it to work in faithful ways.
