Joshua 1:14

Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock, shall live in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but you shall pass over before your brothers armed, all the mighty men of valor, and shall help them

What does Joshua 1:14 mean?

Joshua and the Israelites are preparing to cross the Jordan River and enter the promised land. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh had already received their land allotment on the eastern side of the Jordan, but Joshua is calling on their fighting men to join the others in conquering Canaan first, leaving their families and animals safely behind. The heart of this instruction is about shared responsibility and mutual support. These warriors could have stayed comfortable in their own territory, but Joshua reminds them that their strength is needed for their brothers and sisters across the river. It's a beautiful picture of how communities thrive when those with resources and ability step up for the common good, even when it requires sacrifice and effort.
