John 6:19
“When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid.”
What does John 6:19 mean?
The disciples have been rowing across the sea for hours when something impossible appears: Jesus walking toward them on the water as casually as someone strolling along a road. Their fear makes complete sense, because what they're witnessing defies everything they know about how the world works. In that moment, they don't yet understand who Jesus is or what he's capable of, so they're terrified by what seems like a ghost or some kind of supernatural threat. This story captures something true about encounters with the divine. When God shows up in ways we don't expect, our first response is often fear, not comfort. But notice that Jesus comes toward them anyway, moving closer even as they're afraid. That's the beginning of grace, even before a single reassuring word is spoken.
