What does John 6:18 mean?
The disciples are alone on the water when a storm hits, and this simple detail captures the fear and helplessness they must have felt. Wind and rough seas meant real danger for ancient fishermen, even those experienced with boats. The Gospel writers include this because it sets up Jesus appearing to them in the darkness, showing up precisely when they're most afraid and most aware they can't control their situation. Sometimes we need to feel the full weight of our circumstances before we're truly ready to recognize God's presence in them.
